Here is the Online Review of Chinese Poker Game – is a 4 player card game played on a regular 52-card deck wherein the players are dealt with 13 cards each.  Each player must arrange his or her hand in a 3-5-5 manner, weakest to strongest – 3 cards at the top, 5 cards in the middle, and 5 cards at the bottom, where the 3 top cards have the weakest combination and the bottom has the strongest. The players will then have to set down their cards, turn by turn (clockwise, starting from the dealer) and declare whether or not they will play their hand. If a player makes a royalty (or “luck”), he or she automatically wins the hand.

The combinations can either be a pair/s, three of a kind, straights, flushes, straight flush, royal flush, full house, and four of a kind. The hierarchy of the combinations is as follows (strongest to weakest):

  • Royal Flush
  • 4 of a Kind
  • Full House
  • Flush
  • Straight
  • 3 of a Kind
  • 2 Pairs
  • Pair
  • Singles

The suit of the card also declares which combination is stronger than the other. The hierarchy of the face is as follows (strongest to weakest):

  • Diamond
  • Heart
  • Spade
  • Club

For the royalty combination, either straight flush, royal flush, four of a kind or full house may be used depending on the agreement on the rules. Chinese Poker has rules to follow and strategies must be applied to win. One rule of the game is to avoid fouling wherein you arrange your cards in the wrong hierarchy order. Remember that the manner of arrangement must be 3-5-5 where the 3 top cards have the weakest combination and the bottom 5 cards have the strongest (see hierarchy of combinations above). Also, the suit of the cards, in terms of hierarchy, must be considered when making combinations.

You can either be offensive or defensive in this game, depending on the situation. For example, you can go offensive by going for a Heart Flush combination because you see that you have more than 5 cards with a Heart suit and some Diamonds. Given this, there is a good chance that the other Heart and Diamond cards have been dispersed to the other players, limiting their chance of making a Heart or Diamond Flush.

If you see that you have been dealt with a poor hand, better go defensive by either focusing only on the bottom 5 cards or dispersing your combinations to all of the levels of your hand. For example, the only possible combinations you can make out of your hand are three Pairs and Three of a Kind. In this situation, you can either go for a Singles-Two Pairs-Full House, Pair-Pair-Full House, or Pair-Two Pairs-Three of a Kind. If you have Pairs that are high in value and suits (A, K, Q, or J) and Three of a Kind with low values, better go for Pair-Two Pairs-Three of a Kind.

This way, you can increase your chance to win on the Top and Middle cards since building a Full House at the bottom with low Three of a Kind can easily be beaten by a stronger Full House from your opponent. So, better take the chance and making your Middle and Top cards stronger to increase your chances of winning. Chinese Poker is an exciting strategic game and at the same time, fast-paced. It is a game where you have to really learn how to read and count cards but sometimes, you just have to follow your gut feeling! Enjoy playing this game with your friends.
